About Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park
The Alishan Forest Railway Garage Park in Chiayi City occupies the historic Beimen repair-workshop area. The depot developed as the railway was built and formally began service in 1912. It supported the locomotives, passenger coaches and freight vehicles needed for a demanding mountain railway.
Repair work here involved much more than routine servicing. The workshop's history includes locally making replacement parts, boilers and engines and constructing cypress-bodied carriages. Retired steam and diesel locomotives and other rolling stock make those skills tangible: compare wheel arrangements, driver positions and the different jobs represented by each vehicle.
A fire in 1993 destroyed wooden workshop structures and some historic trains, so today's site combines surviving material with later rebuilding. The area became known as the garage park in 2005, creating a public way to encounter railway history beside an operational railway setting. Read the vehicle labels and remain within the visitor area; displayed rolling stock, working maintenance facilities and scheduled train services are different parts of the railway.
