About Penghu Great Bridge
Penghu Great Bridge (澎湖跨海大桥) connects Baisha and Xiyu across the Houmen Channel. It is a working transport link as well as a landmark, tying Xiyu into the main-island road network. The channel's strong currents and seasonal sea conditions explain why building a dependable crossing mattered to local communities.
The first bridge opened in 1970. Corrosion and structural problems led to later rebuilding, with the present two-lane crossing completed in 1996. The tourism authority gives its length as 2,494 metres. Remains of earlier bridge and electricity-transfer infrastructure near the Xiyu side preserve evidence of previous ways of connecting the islands.
The familiar gateway arch makes an identifiable stopping point, but the longer story is the crossing itself and the water beneath it. Compare the modern road line with surviving older supports from an authorised public area. As this is an active road, photographs and sightseeing should take place at established stops, with the traffic route kept clear.
