About Penghu Tianhou Temple & Central Old Street
Penghu Tianhou Temple and Central Old Street (澎湖天后宫与中央老街) sit within Magong's historic core. The temple honours Mazu, whose protection at sea has long mattered to island communities. Its relationship with the surrounding streets explains how worship, water supply and everyday commerce developed together in the old settlement.
Inside the temple complex, successive halls and side wings contain carved timber, brackets, painted decoration and narrative figures. These details reward close observation, especially the way structural supports also carry symbolic imagery. The temple remains a religious place, so visitors should accommodate worshippers and follow local photography rules.
Nearby Central Street includes the Four-Eyed Well, whose four openings share a common water source below. Before piped water, the well helped sustain the neighbourhood. The Qianyitang herbal-medicine shop is another historic landmark along the street. Taken together, temple, well and commercial buildings offer a compact introduction to Magong's maritime town history, with each serving a different community function.
