About Hong'en Temple Forest Park
Hong'en Temple Forest Park (鸿恩寺森林公园) is a city park of 1,100 mu on Longji Mountain (龙脊山) in Jiangbei District (江北区), Chongqing, crowned by the seven-storey Hong'en Pavilion (鸿恩阁).
Chongqing's 2000 master plan picked this hill for one of the city's principal central parks, and it was built within the Forest Chongqing (森林重庆) greening drive and the push for national garden-city status. Visitors were first admitted on 1 May 2009.
Its two themes are gratitude and osmanthus. The city government counts more than 60 osmanthus varieties here, among them golden, silver, orange and four-season osmanthus, and over ten thousand trees, and lists the park among the city's places to smell the autumn blossom from high ground. The grounds are laid out as twelve named scenes, including Hantian Fort (喊天堡) and Hong'en Archway (鸿恩坊).
Hong'en Pavilion copies the style of Ming and Qing buildings, with upswept eaves, gilded copper tiles and ridges on the top roof and green glazed tiles below. A viewing deck inside stands at 466 m above sea level and looks over the north side of the Yuzhong Peninsula (渝中半岛), the Liangjiang New Area and Shapingba District (沙坪坝区).
Since 2023 the park has been the middle stop on the Hong'en Trail (鸿恩步道), a walkway of about 19.83 km whose main line runs from the Flower Garden (花卉园) through the park to Yangpaoju 1862 (洋炮局1862). Its theme is urban culture and the arsenal industry of the war years; walkers can look out over the Jialing River (嘉陵江) and Hongyancun Bridge (红岩村大桥), and five landscaped stops include the Huangge Old Road (黄葛古道) and the Tenth Arsenal civil air-defence works, landscaped as a lookout called City Balcony (城市阳台).
