About Chongqing Jianchuan Museum Cluster
A People's Daily report on the museum's opening traces the site's history to the Hanyang Arsenal, founded during the late-Qing Self-Strengthening Movement, which relocated here during the war against Japan as the Ordnance Department's First Arsenal; in 2013 the site, as the Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Weapons Industry Site Cluster, was named a national key cultural-heritage protection unit by the State Council. A Xinhua feature adds that workers dug 116 air-raid shelters into the riverside hillside for weapons production during the war; after the founding of the People's Republic the caves were rebuilt as the state-owned Jianshe Machine Tool Manufacturing Factory, which produced both standard-issue weapons and civilian goods before relocating to Banan District in 2003 under a municipal plan, after which the Jiulongpo district government redeveloped the site into a museum-led tourism and creative project.
The museum opened on 18 June 2018 with 8 themed museums, including the First Arsenal Site Museum, the War-of-Resistance Cultural Relics Museum and the Weapons Development History Museum, displaying more than 40,000 items of historical material relating to the war, ordnance and folk life, according to the People's Daily report. By the time of the 2021 Xinhua feature the cluster had grown to 10 themed museums, adding sites such as the Chongqing Story Museum, and its holdings were reported at more than 100,000 items.
