Honey Fried Pastry Flowers (蜂蜜麻糖) are a handmade sweet from Qishuzhuang town (七树庄镇) in Fengrun district (丰润区), Tangshan (唐山), where they are also known as Qishuzhuang matang (七树庄麻糖). Changcheng Network (长城网), a Hebei news site, credits the local sweet with more than 400 years of history.

How it is made

Changcheng Network photographed the work at a Fengrun producer in December 2021. The photo captions show workers sifting flour, rolling out the matang, frying it and packing the finished sweets. Changcheng Network calls it a traditional handmade food.

Shape and flavour

The pieces are shaped like flowers and are described as being as thin as a cicada's wing. The taste is given as fragrant and sweet.

A gift food with a winter season

In Tangshan the sweet is a gift that people take when visiting relatives and friends. Early winter is its peak selling season: Changcheng Network found Qishuzhuang producers running at full capacity, with workers on overtime to fill orders for markets beyond the town.
