Minchi Beef Rice (免治牛肉饭) is the beef-and-rice version of minchi, a Macanese dish of minced meat stir-fried with vegetables. The broader minchi family includes both beef and pork recipes and has a tradition of household variations.
How it is made
Onion and diced potato accompany the minced meat, with mushrooms included in some recipes. Worcestershire sauce, molasses and soy sauce provide the seasoning. The meat and vegetables are lightly stir-fried.
How it is eaten
Minchi is served with rice, and a fried egg can be added on top. The egg-topped preparation is called minchee chow dan (免治炒蛋). The beef version is one form of a dish traditionally cooked at home, where cooks follow their own recipes.
Where it comes from
The name minchi derives from the English verb “to mince”. It entered Macanese vocabulary relatively late, replacing the older term kheema as English became more established in everyday conversation.
