Pengyang Zhunuo Chicken (彭阳朝那鸡) is a local chicken breed from Pengyang County (彭阳县), at the eastern foot of the Liupan Mountains (六盘山) on the southern edge of Ningxia. A feature published by the Fujian Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs describes it as a bird with black skin, black flesh, black bones and a black tongue, raised for both meat and eggs.

Ingredients

The Fujian feature says the chickens range through woodland and hillside by day, eating grass and insects, and are given maize and other whole grain at night, with no synthetic feed added. Pengyang grows alfalfa, which the feature names as one of the birds' main protein feeds. It describes the meat as tender and gives a protein content of 22.5 g and a fat content of 2.4 g per 100 g.

China Daily reports that the breed is known for lean, high-protein meat and for eggs with a rich, fragrant taste.

Where it comes from

Pengyang lies on the loess hill country at the southern edge of Ningxia. According to the Fujian feature, the breed took shape through long selection under free-range conditions in the county's varied climate, and it is on the national protection list of local livestock and poultry genetic resources. China Daily calls it a bird found only in the Liupan Mountains and credits it with a thousand years of rearing. Its report from Mengyuan Township (孟塬乡) describes farms set up with funds from Xiamen (厦门) under the Fujian–Ningxia partnership, with eggs sent to Yinchuan (银川), Lanzhou (兰州) and Pingliang (平凉).
