Fresh Flower Cakes (鲜花饼) are rose-filled pastries associated with Kunming’s (昆明) everyday tradition of eating flowers. Their flaky shells enclose a sweet floral filling, with individual bakers adapting the flavours.

Rose filling and layered pastry

In a 2018 Yunnan Net (云南网) kitchen report at Fonduever (一生有你), fresh petals were separated from their stems and rubbed with Qiaojia (巧家) brown sugar and honey. The filling was rested in a sealed container, then thickened with cooked glutinous rice flour. A lard-and-flour pastry was wrapped around a separate shortening dough, rolled, folded and filled before baking.

Handmade cakes in Kunming

A 2026 Economic Daily (经济日报) report describes Wu Dan’s (吴丹) handmade cakes in Dounan (斗南), Chenggong (呈贡). Their golden crust flakes when broken, releasing butter and rose aromas. Her variations included purple sweet potato, matcha and ham, while freshly prepared petals and a soft, flaky wrapper remained central to her rose cakes.
