Wenling Stuffed Rice Cake (温岭嵌糕) is a breakfast of soft rice cake wrapped around a savoury filling, from Wenling (温岭), a county-level city of Taizhou (台州) on the southeast coast of Zhejiang. Locally it is called xiangao (馅糕, 'filled cake'); qiangao (嵌糕, 'inlaid cake') and jiagao (夹糕, 'sandwiched cake') are its written names.

How it is made

The wrapper is rice cake made from japonica rice (粳米). It is folded round a choice of fillings; Chinese Wikipedia lists fried rice noodles, shredded carrot, shredded zhacai pickled mustard (榨菜) and chopped youtiao fried dough sticks (油条). Tide News (潮新闻) of Zhejiang Daily describes the rice cake as soft and sticky, filled with an assortment of dishes, and splashed with broth before it is closed.

How it is eaten

Wenling Stuffed Rice Cake is one of the city's typical breakfasts, and is often eaten together with doufusheng (豆腐生), a local tofu dish. Tide News notes that in Wenling, rice cake is better known by the name qiangao. Similar fillings go into shibingtong (食饼筒), a Wenling food for the Dragon Boat Festival, which uses a pancake spread from batter instead of rice cake.
