Setting and landscape
Heping County (和平县) lies to the east, Dongyuan (东源县) and Xinfeng (新丰县) to the south and Wengyuan (翁源县) to the west. The land is higher in the north and west than in the south and east; the Jiulian range runs from the north of the county towards the west and south-west, and the average elevation is 693.5 metres. Middle and low mountains fill the north and centre, hills the south-west and valley basins the south-east, and there is karst terrain around Beitou (陂头) and Neiguan (内莞).
Most of the county drains to the Dong River through the Lianping (连平河), Daxi (大席河), Zhongxin (忠信河) and Dahu (大湖河) rivers; the Beitou and Guidong (贵东河) rivers flow to the Bei River (北江) instead. The climate is mid-subtropical monsoon, with long summers and winters and short springs and autumns.
History
Excavated relics show people living here in the Neolithic. In 1634, under the Ming, land cut from Heping, Heyuan, Changning (长宁, now Xinfeng) and Wengyuan counties became Lianping Prefecture (连平州), seated at Yuanshan town (元善镇), still the county town. It was renamed a county in 1911. From 1958 to 1962 Lianping and Heping were merged, and Lianping has belonged to Heyuan since 1988.
What to see
Two of the sights the county is best known for are in Neiguan town (内莞镇), in the north-east of the county and crossed by National Road 105: the Shengji Cangyan scenic area (圣迹苍岩风景区) and the natural scenery of Neiguan (内莞自然风光). Elsewhere are the Xishan waterfall (溪山瀑布), Peach Blossom Hill at Shangping (上坪桃花山) and the Huangniushi scenic area (黄牛石风景区).
Food and local products
Lianping eagle-beak peach (连平鹰嘴蜜桃) is a Chinese geographical indication product, described by the county as bright, large, crisp and sweet. In November 2005 Lianping was named China's home of the eagle-beak peach.
