About Zhengyang Pedestrian Street
Its red clock tower makes a useful meeting point among restaurants, souvenir shops and clothing stores. The side streets introduce a smaller scale, including the adjoining Shangshui food quarter. Treat the street as a flexible meal and shopping interval between nearby sights, with the current storefronts and menus determining what is worth stopping for.
Zhengyang Street has a long history: it was first built during the Han dynasty and reached the height of its prominence during the Qing dynasty. In earlier periods it served as Guilin's political and commercial centre, a gathering place for high officials and merchants of the city.
The street runs along the central axis of the historic Jingjiang Prince City (靖江王城) and is close to the Li River, Xiangshan Park (象山公园) and Duxiu Peak (独秀峰). It is 666 meters long, a figure chosen to echo the traditional phrase for good fortune, “六六大顺”, and about 13 meters wide.
What to look for
- The red clock tower provides the street’s most recognisable built landmark.
- Shopping fronts and food lanes show the commercial life of central Guilin.
