About Dragon Mother Temple
Guangxi News Network reported that the temple, restored in the mid-1980s and progressively expanded since, covers 110,000 square metres and includes a memorial archway, a five-dragon water-spouting wall, a front hall, the Dragon Mother's main hall, her sleeping chamber, a bell tower, a drum tower, a pagoda tower and a 38-metre statue of the Dragon Mother, which the report describes as the tallest of its kind in the country. Local tradition, the report recorded, holds that the Dragon Mother was a leader of the ancient southern Cangwu people, born on the eighth day of the fifth lunar month — locally observed as Longmu Dan, her birthday — and that she died on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, observed as Shengxian Ri, her ascension day; she is credited with leading people to tame mountains and waters for the community's benefit, and worshippers travel from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau to burn incense at the temple during festivals.
Guangxi's consolidated list of autonomous-region-level intangible cultural heritage records two separate Wuzhou entries connected to the temple: Wuzhou Longmu Dan, declared by Wuzhou Longmu Temple Development Co., Ltd. and listed in the first batch in 2007, and Wuzhou Longmu Xinsu (Wuzhou's Dragon Mother folk beliefs), declared by Wuzhou Longmu Scenic Area Development Co., Ltd. and attributed to Wanxiu District in the eighth batch in 2020.
