About Taiping Ancient City
A Guangxi Radio and Television report traces the site's name to the Northern Song Taiping Xingguo era, when a Taiping stockade was set up on the Zuojiang circuit; the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties in turn maintained a Taiping route and then a Taiping prefecture there, giving it more than 1,000 years of recorded history. The old city wall itself is recorded as built in the fifth year of the Ming Hongwu era, 1372, with five gates: east, greater west, lesser west, south and north. The east gate, greater west gate, lesser west gate and about 1,360 metres of ruined wall survive today on Taiping Road, and cultural-heritage authorities continue conservation work there; the station's own report calls the site the most completely preserved Ming-dynasty prefectural stone city surviving in Guangxi.
China Daily's Guangxi bureau describes the surrounding scenic area, built around the old city and themed on Luoyue culture, Zhuang culture, water culture and sugar culture, as having restored and expanded an inner waterway and a prefectural government hall on the original site and repaired the old city wall, alongside new commercial space combining folk-custom performances, technology-based management and intangible-heritage transmission. The Guangxi Radio and Television report adds that the surrounding scenic area was named part of the second group of national night-time culture-and-tourism consumption clusters in 2022 and received the '2023 Guangxi Night-Tour Street Brand' title.
