History

The district takes its name from a remark Mao Zedong made on a visit to Handan in September 1959, that the city had to revive (邯郸是要复兴的). Industry then grew fast: a steel and chemical zone was built west of the railway and Fuxing Road was laid out. The district itself was created in October 1980, together with Congtai (丛台区) and Hanshan (邯山区). Handan Iron and Steel (邯钢) still anchors a base of metallurgy, building materials and equipment makers.

The district government counts more than a hundred protected heritage points, among them Longshan and Yangshao culture remains, the Eastern Han Dingguo Chan Temple (定国禅寺) and the Shengjinggang Dragon God Temple (圣井岗龙神庙).

What to see

The Zhao Handan city site (赵邯郸故城), capital of the Warring States kingdom of Zhao (赵), has been on the first national list of key protected monuments since 1961; the district government calls the Zhao Royal City (赵王城遗址) the most complete surviving Zhao capital. The Jiangou site (涧沟遗址) in Jiangou village, Hucun town (户村镇), joined the national list in 2013; a local saying holds that Jiangou village came before Handan city. In its Longshan culture layer, excavators found a house floor with six human skulls bearing blows and scalping marks, and abandoned wells holding five layers of skeletons.

For open space, the Garden Expo Park (园博园) is rated a national 4A scenic area, and the Qinhe Country Park (沁河郊野公园) and the Kanghu (康湖) eco area are holiday leisure spots for city residents. The Ganghua themed street (钢花风情街), the Xinshishang night market (馨食尚不夜城) and the Dacheng food street (大乘美食街) are the featured streets of the western main urban area.

Getting oriented

The Beijing–Guangzhou and Handan–Changzhi railways cross the district, as do the Qingdao–Lanzhou and ring expressways and National Highways 107 and 309. Fuxing sits right next to Handan railway station, and Handan airport and Handan East high-speed station are both within 10 kilometres.
