About Hebei Museum

The Changxin Palace lantern and jade burial suit associated with Liu Sheng reveal the technical ambition of Han elite burials, while Zhongshan material introduces a less familiar Warring States culture. The main campus combines the older northern building with a newer southern extension. Choose these archaeological collections first, then add temporary art exhibitions according to the current gallery programme.

Hebei Museum's predecessor, the Hebei Provincial Museum, was established in April 1953 at the Old Lotus Pond (古莲花池) in Baoding. It moved to Shijiazhuang in 1982, initially borrowing space in the Hebei Exhibition Hall, formerly known as the 'Mao Zedong Thought Triumphant Victory Exhibition Hall.' In 1986 the exhibition hall and the museum merged into a new Hebei Provincial Museum, which reopened the following year. Its main building, now the museum's north wing, was listed as a Hebei provincial cultural relic protection unit in 2001.

The museum is organized into a main campus plus the smaller Jianhua and Yucai campuses; the main campus is divided into north and south sections, with the north section occupying the original Hebei Provincial Museum building itself, facing the city's Culture Square.

Hebei Museum holds about 240,000 artifacts, including more than 360 pieces rated as national grade-1 relics. Its best-known holdings are objects excavated from the Western Han joint tomb of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and his wife Dou Wan at Lingshan in Mancheng, exhibited in the gallery 'A Song of the Great Han: The Mancheng Han Tombs' (大汉绝唱——满城汉墓).
