About Beiji Village

The Shenzhou Beiji monument gives that theme a visible centre, while the public riverside places the village opposite Russia's wooded bank. Summer brings very long daylight and winter a short, cold day, but the village is outside the Arctic Circle. Its name should not be read as a promise of midnight sun or aurora; the border-river setting and village circuit stand on their own.

Beiji Village was formerly called Mohe Village (漠河村; Manchu: Mo bira), also known by the Russian name 'Matyora' (Матёра). It is the seat of Beiji Town's government (formerly Mohe Township) in Mohe City, and the Northern First Sentry Post (北方第一哨), an Arctic border post, is located there. Because the village lies above 53°N, summer daytime here often exceeds 17 hours, with correspondingly long winter nights.

China's actual geographic northernmost point lies near the Wusuli Shoal (乌苏里浅滩) at the north end of Tuqiang Town, in the main channel of the Heilongjiang River, about 61 kilometers east-northeast of Beiji Village; the country's northernmost village or town is instead Beihong Village (北红村).
