About Harbin Ice and Snow World
Their size, translucent surfaces and lighting make the experience different from the sculpted-snow exhibition on Sun Island. The complex also has an indoor Dream Ice and Snow Pavilion, where cold conditions preserve ice sculptures beyond winter. Decide which part you intend to visit before travelling: the seasonal outdoor park and the indoor pavilion offer different experiences and do not imply the same opening dates or ticket.
Harbin had already held an ice festival featuring ice lanterns, snow sculptures and ice buildings, mostly at Zhaolin Park (兆麟公园); 1999 marked its sixteenth edition. At the turn of the millennium the municipal government decided to build a larger 'Ice and Snow World' on a Songhua River sandbar, aiming to rival Disneyland. The project covered nearly 200,000 square meters, used 60,000 cubic meters of ice and 130,000 cubic meters of snow, and was built by more than 5,000 workers over 33 days, completed on 25 December 1999.
It was renamed Harbin Ice and Snow World for its second edition in 2000, moved to Sun Island's upper dock area (上坞区) for its third edition in 2001, and settled later that year in the island's western area on the Songhua River's north bank.
Harbin is among the coldest major cities in the world in winter, and the frozen Songhua River supplies the ice used in construction, allowing the resulting buildings to stand outdoors for more than two months. Visible each winter from across the river near the Flood Control Monument (防洪胜利纪念塔), the park served as a branch venue for the 2025 Asian Winter Games' opening ceremony, hosting the Games' main torch tower and its lighting ceremony.
