About Jiao Yulu Memorial Park
Jiao Yulu came from Zibo in Shandong and took office as party secretary of Lankao in December 1962. His work in the county was directed at the three local afflictions of blown sand, soil salinisation and waterlogging, and he died on 14 May 1964 at the age of 42. The cemetery was founded in February 1966 and took its present name, the Jiao Yulu Memorial Park, in July 2007. It covers 91.7 mu and is arranged as a symmetrical garden on a central axis, with three principal elements: the revolutionary martyrs' monument, Jiao Yulu's tomb and the memorial hall.
The monument stands at the centre of the southern part of the park. Completed in May 1993, it rises 19.64 metres, a height chosen to recall the year of his death, and carries an inscription in Mao Zedong's handwriting. The tomb lies at the highest point of the burial area to the north: a marble stele 2.75 metres high, inscribed on the front with the words Tomb of the martyr Jiao Yulu and on the back with his biography, above a grave cover faced in white marble, with two tablets in front bearing long poems by Dong Biwu and Guo Moruo. The memorial hall, west of the burial area, was completed in April 1994 with 2,100 square metres of floor area and 1,300 square metres of exhibition space; a bronze bust stands at the front of the entrance hall, and a sculpture group of scenes from his work was unveiled outside the main door in August 2010.
