About Official Residence of the Nanyang Prefect
The broad main hall was used for formal announcements and receptions; the second and third halls served more routine business and the prefect’s inner life. Gates and a brick screen wall mark the divisions. Reading those thresholds as you move inward gives the complex more meaning than treating each hall as an isolated old building.
Nanyang's prefectural yamen, commonly called Nanyang Fuya or Nanyang Fushu, stands at No. 100 Minzhu Street in Wancheng District. It served as the official residence of the prefects of Nanyang through the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, and is described as the only completely preserved, fully regulated prefectural yamen in China. The surviving buildings, numbering more than 150 rooms, extend 240 metres north to south and 150 metres east to west, covering an area of 36,000 square metres.
The complex is presented as a complete physical example of the prefecture-level administrative system established after Qin Shi Huang introduced the commandery-and-county system, and the surviving buildings are described as a historical archive of that system, likened to a miniature of Beijing's Forbidden City and treated as a symbol of Nanyang's status as a historic and cultural city.
