About Dragon’s Back Hike
Dragon’s Back is an undulating ridge between Wan Cham Shan and Shek O Peak in southeastern Hong Kong Island. It lies within Shek O Country Park and is associated with the final stage of the Hong Kong Trail. The ridge gives the walk its name and its distinctive sequence of coastal views.
Open sections look towards Shek O, Big Wave Bay and offshore islands, while other parts enter woodland. The contrast between exposed ridge and sheltered forest is central to the experience. The complete Hong Kong Trail stage continues beyond the most familiar viewpoint, so a ridge photograph alone does not describe the distance or effort of a chosen itinerary.
Decide whether you want a shorter ridge outing or a longer through-walk before setting off. On the exposed section, compare the bays and headlands on either side instead of rushing between photo stops. Heat, wind, rain and poor visibility can change the difficulty considerably. Carry drinking water and use the marked country-park route.
What to look for
- Follow the changing coastal views along the undulating ridge.
- Compare exposed hilltop terrain with the wooded sections.
