About Lion Rock on Designated Hiking Trails
Lion Rock is the distinctive rocky ridge above Kowloon, within Lion Rock Country Park. Its profile and city views make it a recognisable part of Hong Kong’s landscape. The mountain is reached through a network of country-park trails, so a visit involves choosing a specific hiking route rather than navigating directly to a viewpoint marker.
The ridge runs broadly east to west, with trails connecting it to the surrounding hills and passes. AFCD describes approaches through Lion Rock Pass and a wider park network that also includes part of the MacLehose Trail. A summit detour is different from staying on the longer-distance trail, and the rocky upper terrain should not be treated as an ordinary urban promenade.
Use a current official trail map to choose an approach and a return that match your experience and available daylight. The changing view of Kowloon is one reason to pause, but a safe stopping place matters more than reaching a particular photo angle. Remain on designated paths, give narrow sections space and turn back if weather or visibility makes the planned route unsuitable.
What to look for
- Observe the lion-shaped rocky ridge from safe points on the trail.
- Compare the city, passes and surrounding hills as the route climbs.
