About High Island Reservoir East Dam

High Island Reservoir East Dam is one of Hong Kong’s clearest places to see large volcanic rock columns beside major water infrastructure. It lies in Sai Kung East Country Park, between reservoir views and the exposed coast. Excavation during construction helped reveal the rock faces that now make the area an important geosite.

The columns are formed in rhyolitic volcanic rock and commonly display hexagonal cross-sections. The geopark trail allows visitors to compare upright columns with bent or disrupted structures and the surrounding coastal landscape. The dam itself adds an engineering scale to the scene, making the contrast between built structures and geological formations especially easy to read.

Begin with the designated interpretation points and trace individual columns with your eyes before looking across the whole rock face. Keep the main East Dam visit separate from the Po Pin Chau trail extension. The latter involves its own route, elevation and access arrangements, and a photograph of the sea stack should not be treated as evidence of a simple level stroll.

What to look for

  • Study the volcanic columns from designated viewpoints.
  • Compare the dam, reservoir and wave-shaped coastal scenery.
