About Hong Kong Park and Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware

Hong Kong Park sits above Admiralty and Central on part of the former Victoria Barracks site. Landscaped water features, planted areas and surviving garrison buildings create a varied urban park. Flagstaff House, now the Museum of Tea Ware, links the garden visit with architecture and Chinese tea culture.

Flagstaff House was built in the 1840s as a military commander’s residence. Its conversion into a museum gives the building a new relationship with the public. Inside, tea vessels and related material invite attention to shape, material and use, while the surrounding park contains other preserved buildings alongside an aviary and conservatory.

Begin with the house exterior so that the museum’s setting remains part of the visit. In the galleries, compare handles, spouts and proportions rather than looking only for elaborate decoration. Afterwards, a walk through the park can connect the former barracks buildings with the present landscape. Individual indoor facilities follow their own opening arrangements.

What to look for

  • Compare tea-vessel forms and materials in the museum.
  • Find the former garrison buildings within the modern park.
