About Yim Tin Tsai Island

Yim Tin Tsai is a small island near Sai Kung with a Hakka settlement shaped by fishing, farming, salt-making and Catholic community life. Its name recalls the salt pans, which remain central to understanding the island. This is the Sai Kung island; other Hong Kong places share similar salt-field names.

Village life declined as residents moved away, but heritage and arts projects have helped bring activity back. The restored salt pans, St Joseph’s Chapel and the former Ching Po School offer different views of this history. Artworks add a contemporary layer, while mangroves and the Jade-Girdle Bridge connect the village with its coastal setting.

Read the island as a sequence of work, worship and community spaces. Compare the salt-making landscape with the chapel and school, then allow time for the shoreline. Heritage recognition for individual conservation projects should not be confused with the whole island being a UNESCO World Heritage property. The geopark and local interpretation explain the specific distinctions.

What to look for

  • Connect the salt pans with the village’s livelihoods.
  • Look at the chapel, former school and contemporary artworks.
