About Suzhou Museum
Glass and stone admit and shape light through the galleries.
The collections include Buddhist objects from local pagodas, paintings, calligraphy and handmade crafts. Begin with the courtyard composition, then choose the Wu-region material and painting galleries. This is the museum beside the Humble Administrator’s Garden, distinct from the newer West branch at Shishan.
Suzhou Museum was established on New Year's Day 1960 in Gusu District, Suzhou. The site combines two parts: an eastern old wing occupying the former residence of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom's Loyal Prince (太平天国忠王府), and a western new building designed by architect I. M. Pei (贝聿铭), completed and opened in 2006.
The new building covers about 10,750 square meters and is arranged in three parts: a central section with the entrance, lobby and museum garden, a western section for exhibition galleries, and an eastern section housing a contemporary art gallery, education facilities, a tea service area and administrative offices.
The museum holds more than 40,000 cultural relics, chiefly items excavated in Suzhou, literati calligraphy and painting, and folk crafts of the Jiangnan region, including nearly 250 pieces rated first-class national relics (国家一级文物). The new building presents four permanent exhibition series: Wudi Yizhen (吴地遗珍), Wuta Guobao (吴塔国宝), Wuzhong Fengya (吴中风雅) and Wumen Shuhua (吴门书画).
What to look for
- I. M. Pei’s courtyard building combines white walls with dark stone and glass roofs.
- Buddhist material from local pagodas gives the collections a specific Suzhou connection.
The surrounding area
A provincial city base for classical gardens, canals and soup-noodle breakfasts; do not confuse its old city with the distant North railway station.
