About Nanchang Changbei International Airport
For arriving passengers, the most useful orientation is the connection between the terminal, the airport’s Metro Line 1 station and the road-transfer area. The metro extension opened in 2025, changing what older guides describe as an airport reached only by road. Check the terminal on the flight booking before arranging pickup.
Nanchang's previous airport, Xiangtang Airport (向塘机场), was a dual-use civil and military field whose traffic grew from 102 passengers in 1957 to more than 800,000 a year by 1996, beyond its capacity. Changbei Airport, in Lehua town (乐化镇) north of the city, opened on 10 September 1999 and took over all commercial flights, after which Xiangtang reverted to military use only. Capital Airport Holding took over the airport's operation from the Jiangxi provincial government in 2003, the year passenger numbers first passed one million. The airport was upgraded to international status in February 2004, with its English name approved that April, and was certified as a Class 4E international airport in February 2012.
Changbei lies 28 km north of central Nanchang, 107 km from Jiujiang and less than 90 km from the Lushan Scenic Area (庐山风景名胜区). Passenger traffic exceeded ten million for the first time in 2017, after Nanchang and Jiangxi authorities began subsidizing new routes, and annual throughput later ranked among the top 30 nationally. The airport currently serves more than 70 domestic and international cities on around 85 routes, operated by 41 airlines.
