About Sacred Heart Cathedral, Jilin
Completed in 1926, the brick-and-stone building combines a tall bell tower with a roughly cruciform church plan. Its exterior proportions and carved details are the main features of an architectural visit. The church continues to serve a religious community, so interior entry depends on local worship and access arrangements rather than a sightseeing timetable alone.
French Paris Foreign Missions priests arrived in Jilin from Changchun in 1898 to establish a mission, and the church bought land beside the river in 1902. Construction of the cathedral began in 1917 and took ten years, finishing in 1926. The bell tower rises 45 meters, and the building measures 33 meters from north to south and 27 meters east to west, on a site of 6,449 square meters with a floor area of 800 square meters.
During the Cultural Revolution beginning in 1966 the building was occupied and damaged; religious authorities repaired it after 1980, and it has since resumed regular religious activities. It was listed among the seventh batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level in 2013.
From its completion in 1926 until 1994, the church served as the cathedral of the Jilin Vicariate and later the Diocese of Jilin. After Bishop Li Xuesong died in 1994, the diocese administrator moved the bishop's seat to Changchun, where St. Teresa's Church became the new cathedral; the move gained Vatican acceptance after Bishop Zhang Hanmin received papal recognition in 2008.
