Setting and landscape
The county government sums up the land as 'five parts hills, one part water, four parts fields' (五山一水四分田), a semi-mountainous county that is higher in the west than the east, ringed by hills with rolling uplands between. It also lies within what the government calls Asia's golden corn belt. The Siping–Meihekou railway (四梅铁路) crosses the county.
History
The county was created in 1902 as Dongping (东平县) under Hailong prefecture (海龙府) of Fengtian, and renamed Dongfeng in 1914 because it lies east of Xifeng (西丰县). It was moved from Liaodong province into Jilin together with Liaoyuan in 1954. The county government describes it as one of the places where the Manchus originated.
Food and local products
Deer are Dongfeng's signature product. The area was historically known as the Shengjing hunting ground and imperial deer park (盛京围场、皇家鹿苑), and the county government says it was the first place in China to rear sika deer in captivity. Dongfeng sika deer and deer products carry the national geographical-indication label, and in 2024 Dongfeng velvet antler entered the national register of distinctive agricultural products. In 2020 the Guanshan deer farm (养鹿官山园) was named a China sika deer domestication viewing base.
What to see
Dongfeng farmer painting (东丰农民画) was added to Jilin's provincial intangible heritage list in 2009, was shown at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010, and went on exhibition at United Nations headquarters in 2014; a farmer painting hall (农民画馆) stands in the new district built since 2009. Nanzhao Mountain (南照山) is a provincial forest park where hills and water meet. The county government also points to the Jiangcheng forest botanical garden (江诚森林植物园), a rhododendron valley and the Zhalanfenwei Manchu folk culture park (扎兰芬围民俗文化园).
