About Liaoyang Museum
Liaoyang Museum (辽阳博物馆) is a general museum in Liaoyang (辽阳), Liaoning, at No. 2 Zhongxin Road in Baita District (白塔区). Most of its more than 6,000 objects come from local archaeological excavations.
The museum traces its roots to the Liaoyang Cultural Relics Exhibition Office (辽阳文物陈列所), set up in 1957, and opened as a museum on 1 October 1985, its name written by former vice-premier Bo Yibo (薄一波). Until 2009 it occupied the Peng Mansion (彭公馆), a residence of Peng Xian (彭贤) built in 1921; Peng was head of the Three Eastern Provinces Official Bank (东三省官银号) and president of the Frontier Bank of the Northeast (东北边业银行). The mansion follows the plan of a Qing prince's residence, with three successive courtyards, a hall and two gardens, and became a Liaoning provincial protected site in 1988.
In 2009 the museum moved into a new complex in Chinese traditional style covering 30,000 m², laid out as three courtyard groups. The west court holds the 6,500 m² main building with two permanent exhibitions, "The First City of the Northeast" (东北第一城), on ancient Liaoyang, and a display of highlights of the collection, plus two temporary galleries. The middle court is given to the Han-Wei Mural Hall (汉魏壁画馆) and a corridor and forest of carved steles, and the east court uses the old Peng Mansion buildings, now the Liaoyang Folk Museum (辽阳民俗博物馆), for folk-life displays.
The collection runs from the Neolithic to the Ming and Qing, with the emphasis on Han, Liao-Jin and Ming-Qing material. It includes 21 objects graded national first-class, 208 second-class and 837 third-class. Liaoyang Museum was rated a national AAAA tourist attraction on 1 December 2023 and a national second-grade museum on 23 August 2024.
