About Casa Garden

The house was later used by the East India Company, linking the property with Macau’s trading history. Today the Orient Foundation gives the site a cultural role. Look at the relationship between the residence and its garden before checking any public exhibition; the nearby Old Protestant Cemetery offers a separate continuation on the same historic theme.

Casa Garden was built in the 1770s as the villa of Manuel Pereira (俾利喇), a wealthy Macau merchant. It was later rented to the British East India Company as a residence for the company's chief supervisor of trade with China, its taipan (大班), and other senior British officials, and in 1885 the property passed to the Portuguese Macau government. After the 1960s the building was used as the Camões Museum (贾梅士博物院), and in 1989 the Portuguese authorities sold it to the Orient Foundation, which now occupies it as its Macau office. The building originally had two storeys, but its upper floor was destroyed by a typhoon.

In 2005 the property was listed as part of the Historic Centre of Macau on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Because its first owner kept pigeons, the surrounding area became known as 'White Dove Nest' (白鸽巢), a name reflected in nearby places such as White Dove Nest Park (白鸽巢公园).

What to look for

  • The former residence and compact garden preserve a domestic trading-era setting.
  • Public art exhibitions, when scheduled, add a cultural use to the historic property.
