About Dom Pedro V Theatre
The theatre has long served the Macanese community, but its current interior repair works mean this should be planned as an exterior stop. The tourism office expects the works to finish in early October 2026. Combine the available street view with the nearby Sir Robert Ho Tung Library and check for a reopening notice before planning admission.
The theatre was built in 1860, funded by twenty Macanese (土生葡人) and ten Chinese residents, to commemorate the Portuguese king Dom Pedro V (伯多禄五世); only the main structure was completed at first, and the portico, arcade and neoclassical pediment at the entrance were added in 1873. It served as the assembly hall of Macau's Portuguese community and a Macanese gathering place, and was used as a refugee shelter during the Second World War.
The building is Macau's only European-style theatre, built in neoclassical style. It stands 41.5 metres high and 22 metres wide, with a sloped roof whose ridge rises 12 metres and eaves 7.5 metres above ground. The facade is a 15.7-metre-wide Roman-arched portico topped by a triangular pediment and supported by four sets of Ionic engaged columns forming three arched openings; the side walls carry nine Roman-arched windows 2.45 metres wide. Inside, besides the theatre itself, are a ballroom, a billiard room and a reading room holding old books in English, French and Portuguese.
Closed for nearly two decades because of termite damage, the theatre was restored in renovations completed in 1993 and 2001, and its portico ceiling was later damaged by Typhoon Hato in 2017. In 2005 it was inscribed, as part of the Historic Centre of Macau, on the World Heritage List.
