About Lou Kau Mansion
Its two-storey plan is organised around three courtyards, combining Chinese domestic architecture with decorative influences associated with the Portuguese setting. Move through the courts to see how light reaches the interior and how rooms relate to the shared spaces. The compact house rewards attention to detail rather than a hurried pass through the main entrance.
The mansion was completed in 1889 as the residence of the merchant Lu Huashao (卢华绍), also known as Lu Jiu (卢九), whose private garden was Lu Lianruo Park (卢廉若公园). After the Lou family's decline, ownership passed to others and the house was subdivided and rented out; at its peak more than twenty households lived there, and it lacked maintenance before the 1980s, so that many parts were demolished or rebuilt and its innermost section was removed. The Cultural Affairs Bureau (文化局) began restoration in July 2002, and the mansion was partly opened to the public in mid-2005. Two internal courtyards admit light. In keeping with feng shui principles, a screen inside the main entrance is meant to block ill fortune.
The two-storey house, built of thick blue brick, follows the layout of Guangzhou's Xiguan-style mansions (西关大屋) and is divided into three bays and three sections, an entrance hall, a tea hall (轿听) and a main hall, with several light wells for ventilation. Its decoration mixes Chinese brick carving and plaster sculpture with Western false ceilings, Manchu-style windows (满州窗) and cast-iron railings, and its front windows are Portuguese-style shutters topped with coloured glass. Under Macau's heritage-protection law 83/92/M, the government in 1992 designated the mansion 'a building of architectural artistic value' (具建筑艺术价值之建筑物), a protected structure.
