About Macau International Airport
Public information counters help travellers orient themselves before continuing into the city. The departure level also has luggage storage, which can be useful when a travel day includes time outside the terminal. This is a transport stop rather than a conventional sightseeing attraction; use its public facilities and onward connections according to your flight and immigration arrangements.
Macau International Airport began construction on 15 November 1989 and was built by land reclamation, making it the second airport in the world, after Japan's Kansai International Airport in 1994, and the first in the Greater China region built entirely on a reclaimed island. Most of the construction was concentrated between 28 January 1992 and 8 December 1995, and the airport opened for operations on 9 November 1995. Two sea-crossing bridges, 700 metres and 1,600 metres long, connect the runway's artificial island to the terminal area.
The airport has served as a transfer point for air travel between mainland China and Taiwan, and its routes are now mainly to destinations in mainland China, Taiwan and elsewhere in Asia; since low-cost carriers were introduced in 2004, passenger traffic to Southeast Asia has also grown. Before the airport's construction, several airlines operated helicopter and seaplane services between Hong Kong and Macau from the 1920s to the 1960s, from a seaplane terminal at NAPE (新口岸), on the site of today's Casino Oceanus (海立方娱乐场).
