About Lord Bao Park
In the shrine, the main hall’s statues and inscribed plaques present the official’s later reputation for upright judgment. The tomb complex gives the visit a more personal focus, while Qingfeng Tower and Fuzhuang extend it into a landscaped memorial park. Read the displays as both history and remembrance: popular stories and symbolic objects are part of the way Bao has been represented over time.
The main hall, also called Xiangtang (享堂), contains a statue of Bao Zheng together with standing statues of his four attendants, Wang Chao, Ma Han, Zhang Long and Zhao Hu (王朝、马汉、张龙、赵虎). A plaque reading 'Se Zheng Mang Han' (色正芒寒), written by Li Hanzhang (李瀚章), hangs above; flanking plaques were contributed by the Qianlong-era prefect Xiao Dengshan (肖登山) and, in the Guangxu era, Zuo Xixuan (左锡旋). Three ceremonial blades – the dragon-, tiger- and dog-head guillotines (龙头铡、虎头铡、狗头铡) – stand for Bao's impartiality, alongside displays on the Bao family genealogy and the history of Hefei.
East of the shrine stands a well pavilion, demolished in 1966 and rebuilt in 1980; an inscription there preserves an 1902 account by the provincial graduate Li Guoheng, 'Record of the Fragrant-Flower-Mound Well Pavilion' (香花墩井亭记). According to local tradition, a prefect who drank from the well developed headaches and was later found to be corrupt, giving rise to a belief that its water could reveal official corruption; a former Hefei-brewed beer took the name 'Lianquan' (廉泉, 'clean spring') from this story.
