About Qiupu River
Qiupu River (秋浦河) is a tributary of the lower Yangtze in Anhui that rises in Qimen County (祁门县) and flows north through Shitai County and Guichi District (贵池区) of Chizhou (池州) to join the Yangtze at Chikou (池口).
Chinese Wikipedia gives the main stream as 150 km long, draining about 2,235 km²; a 2015 Guangming Daily (光明日报) article gives 180 km. Two headwaters meet near Xiangkou village (香口村) in Hengdu town (横渡镇), Shitai: the Hongling River (鸿凌河) from Dahongling (大洪岭) in northern Qimen, and the Gongxin River (公信河) from the north side of Mount Xianyu (仙寓山). From there the river winds north-east. Most of the basin is mountainous, and the rains fall mainly from April to July, when the river rises and has repeatedly flooded towns along its banks.
The name was the Shanyue people's word for the marshes below today's Yinhui town (殷汇镇) in the Western Han. In 599, under the Sui, the county was re-established as Qiupu County, named for the river's water, described as "clear green and forever autumnal" (溪流澄碧长秋). Local legend says Xiao Tong (萧统), the Liang crown prince, fished here, prized its mandarin fish and called the water Guichi (贵池); Guichi District takes its name from that story.
Li Bai (李白) toured the river several times and wrote his Seventeen Songs of Qiupu (秋浦歌十七首) about it; Du Mu (杜牧), Wang Anshi (王安石) and Su Dongpo (苏东坡) were among the later poets who followed and left verses, and people in Chizhou call it the "river of poems" (诗河). The river's mandarin fish, Qiupu huagui (秋浦花鳜), has had national geographical-indication protection since 2018. In Shitai the river runs 12 km through Jitan township (矶滩乡), named for rock spurs that jut into the water; the township holds the national 4A Qiupu River Scenic Area.
