About Qianmen Street and Dashilan
Qianmen Street and Dashilan form a commercial walking area south of Beijing's imperial centre. The broad Qianmen shopping street and the smaller streets around Dashilan reveal different scales of the old city's retail life: prominent shopfronts on the main route and a tighter network of businesses in the surrounding lanes.
Established names associated with the area include Zhang Yiyuan tea, Ruifuxiang silk and traditional restaurants. Their presence makes this a useful place to look at how tea, textiles and food remain part of Beijing's public street culture. A historic brand name, however, does not mean that every neighbouring shop or renovated facade is equally old.
For a first walk, choose one stretch of the main street and then explore Dashilan at a slower pace. Compare shop signs and building details before deciding where to stop. The area also contains residential lanes, so leave doorways clear and keep photographs to public streets unless a venue explicitly welcomes visitors.
What to look for
- The contrast between Qianmen’s broad shopping street and Dashilan’s smaller lanes.
