About Guanyue Temple
The shrine originally centred on Guan Yu; Yue Fei was added in 1914, giving the temple its combined name. Wucheng Hall is the main worship hall, while Sanyi Temple honours Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei and Chongxian Hall is devoted to Guan Yu's ancestors.
Each unit was arranged in three successive sections, with the rear buildings later joined into a single three-storey structure. The timber-framed main hall and the complex's wood carving, stone carving and clay sculpture give the compact urban site much of its detail.
What to look for
- Wucheng Hall and the parallel Sanyi and Chongxian temple units.
- Carved timber, stone ornament and clay sculpture around the halls.
- The different dedications to military heroes, sworn brothers and ancestors.
