About Gulangyu Island
The variety is especially clear around the Catholic church, Union Church and Eight Diagrams Mansion, now associated with the island’s organ collection. Musical history and coastal views add to the architectural walk. Plan a compact route from the booked ferry landing, allowing for slopes and separate museum admission instead of trying to cover every attraction before the return sailing.
The island was settled in the late Song and early Yuan dynasties, when it was known as Yuanshazhou or Wulong Yu (Five Dragon Islet); it took the name Gulangyu in the Ming dynasty. Zheng Chenggong (郑成功) used it as a military base against the Qing, and the remains of a drill platform and stone fort gate from that time survive on Sunlight Rock (日光岩). British forces occupied the island during the Opium War until withdrawing in 1845, and after the 1842 Treaty of Nanking made Xiamen a treaty port, nine countries signed an agreement in 1902 turning Gulangyu into an international settlement, with thirteen countries eventually maintaining consulates there.
The island covers 1.77 square kilometers, rising to 92.7 meters at Sunlight Rock, and in 1898 was home to Huaide Kindergarten, China's first kindergarten. Shuzhuang Garden (菽庄花园), built in 1913 by Lin Erjia (林尔嘉) after his family relocated from Taiwan, was donated to the Xiamen government in 1951, and Haoyue Garden (皓月园) holds a 15.7-meter stone statue of Zheng Chenggong erected in 1985. Gulangyu's own district, once the smallest sub-prefecture-level district in China, was merged into Xiamen's Siming district in 2003, and the island was inscribed on the World Heritage List in July 2017.
