About Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport
Its two passenger terminals, T3 and T4, serve different flight allocations, so the terminal name matters as much as the airport name. T4 connects directly with the bus rapid-transit system, while airport coaches provide other city and railway connections. Use this page as an arrival orientation: the useful sequence is baggage collection, the correct ground-transport area and the booked city destination, not a sightseeing circuit.
Built in 1941 east of Gaoqi Village (高崎村) during the Japanese occupation, the airfield began scheduled flights to Taipei on 5 December that year while also serving as a military base. After Japan's surrender the Nationalist government converted it to civilian use on 1 November 1947. Management passed to the Republic of China Air Force in February 1949, and on 24 August 1949 the last flight departed for Taipei before the airport closed as the People's Liberation Army took Xiamen.
The airport has one runway measuring 3,400 by 45 meters and a parallel taxiway of 3,300 meters with seven connecting taxiways, giving an aerodrome reference code of 4E. It covers 3 square kilometers in total, including an apron of 250,000 square meters and a terminal area of 149,000 square meters. Terminal 4, which opened on 28 December 2014, allowed the airport to run two terminals at once.
The airport is a base for Xiamen Airlines, Shandong Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Spring Airlines, and hosts the Xiamen Taikoo Aircraft Engineering Company (厦门太古飞机工程公司) for maintenance. It is expected to be replaced by Xiamen Xiang'an International Airport, with closure and relocation of operations planned for 24 December 2026.

Background & history
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (IATA: XMN, ICAO: ZSAM) is an international airport serving the city of Xiamen in East China's Fujian province. It is the main airline hub for XiamenAir and TAECO, an aircraft maintenance provider. It is located on the north side of Xiamen Island, 10 km (6.2 mi) away from the city's downtown area. It was originally built by Imperial Japan during their occupation of China, and was later converted to exclusive civilian use once the Japanese surrendered World War II. A couple of renovations were made in the early- to mid-1950s under the Communist government, but the airport laid abandoned until after a second renovation in 1955 due to fears of shelling from the nearby Kinmen Island of the Nationalists. In 1983, the airport re-opened with funding from the Kuwait Fund for further renovations and construction, and over the next decade passenger traffic rapidly increased so that it warranted the construction of Terminal 2 in 1993. In 1996, Terminal 3 was opened.
