About Dunhuang Museum

Its permanent exhibition treats the city as a meeting place, tracing Han development, later regional life and the flourishing Sui–Tang period. The material helps connect scattered desert sites with the people who lived, travelled and traded here. This is a useful first stop before frontier excursions, with a different emphasis from Mogao’s cave-art tour.

What to look for

  • The Han-period objects and written records within the city-history exhibition.
  • Painted-brick and later material illustrating the oasis’s changing cultural life.
