About Fangji Island
This is the Maoming island, distinct from Mayu Island in Shantou, which shares a historical name. Rocky coastal formations, beaches and wooded slopes create a landscape that changes noticeably around the shore.
The island's visitor areas have included Gold Beach, the wave-shaped rocks of the Chicken Head area and a southern pandanus landscape. These are useful features for understanding the island, but an island itinerary depends on the resort and passenger boats operating. Check the reopening information before arranging a special trip from the mainland.
What to look for
- Gold Beach and the contrast between the sandy shoreline and the island's rocky coastal edges.
- The Chicken Head area's sea-eroded rock formations, named for their shapes.
- The pandanus landscape in the southern part of the island and views across the coastal rocks.
Location & getting there
Getting to Fangji Island
The mainland approach is via Bohe (博贺), Dianbai District, Maoming. Fangji tourism passenger berths are recorded on the west side of Bohe fishing harbour and on the island. Confirm the currently operating visitor pier and boat service with the resort before travelling to Bohe; the island map pin is across the water, not a road destination.
- Search 茂名放鸡岛 or 电白博贺放鸡岛 to avoid the similarly named island in Shantou.
- As checked on 6 September 2026, Ctrip's listing displays 'temporarily closed; reopening to be determined'. This is a booking-platform status, so obtain current confirmation from the operator before booking transport or accommodation.
Combine your visit
If public access and return boats are confirmed, keep this as an island visit rather than combining it with distant mainland attractions. The following is a possible sequence of documented visitor areas, subject to the operator's open routes.
-
Gold Beach黄金海滩
Start with the sandy coastal landscape; use only the beach areas and paths currently open to visitors.
-
Chicken Head scenery鸡头风光
Compare the sea-eroded rocks with the beach landscape. Choose the route approved by the operator for that day.
-
Southern pandanus landscape野菠萝公园
Consider the southern vegetation and coastal viewpoints only if the route and return-boat timing allow.
Conditional itinerary for a reopened attraction. This does not confirm current operations, swimming access or water-sport availability.
