About Wenchang
Wencheng’s urban centre provides food and transport, while Qinglan and Dongjiao belong to a coastal excursion; Longlou and the launch-viewing area require another transfer. The Song family ancestral home adds a modern-history stop in Changsa. Plan by these clusters rather than attempting to cover the whole municipality between trains, and leave time for Wenchang chicken as part of the local experience.
Wenchang covers an area of 2,403 square kilometres in the northeastern part of Hainan Island, with a coastline of 207 kilometres, and is divided into 17 towns. Its east side faces the South China Sea, while to the west it borders Dongzhai Harbour, Haikou's Meilan District, Qionghai and Ding'an County. The land is mostly hilly, with a mix of forest and agricultural areas.
Wenchang was elevated from a county to a city on 7 November 1995; its population was recorded as 86,551 in 1999, with an estimated increase to 115,000 by 2006. The city is a major target for typhoons in the northwestern Pacific and experiences the most frequent and severe typhoon-induced storm surges in the South China Sea.
