About Qinhuangdao
These areas are spread along the coast, so choose your base around the visit you value most. Shanhaiguan offers gates, walls and the sea-ending section at Old Dragon's Head; Beidaihe combines beaches with bird habitat and resort-era architecture. A sensible first plan groups the two Shanhaiguan sites together and keeps Beidaihe for another outing rather than treating the coast as one walkable centre.
According to tradition, Qinhuangdao takes its name from the First Emperor of Qin, who visited Jieshi during his fourth eastern tour, carved an inscription there, and sent envoys to sea in search of immortality; a variant tradition instead credits the future Tang Taizong, who is said to have stopped here during a campaign against Goguryeo. Han Wudi later toured the coast and built the Han Wu Terrace at Jieshi, and Cao Cao passed along this shore during his campaign against the Wuhuan and wrote the poem 'Guan Canghai' (观沧海) there.
In 1381 the early Ming general Xu Da built the Shanhaiguan fortress on the coast here, and the place name 'Qinhuangdao' is first recorded in the 1535 edition of the Shanhaiguan Gazetteer. The harbour opened for shipping in 1898, the same year the Tianjin-Linyu railway reached the area and the Qing government designated Beidaihe a resort open to foreigners; dredged silt gradually joined the formerly offshore Qinhuangdao islet to the mainland.
The magnitude-7.8 Tangshan earthquake of 28 July 1976 also caused some damage in Qinhuangdao and Tianjin. In 1984 the city became one of the first group of nationally designated open coastal cities, and it later served as a co-host city for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
