About Mohe
Its own compact circuit tells an important story: Songyuan preserves woodland within the town, the May Sixth Fire Memorial explains the devastating 1987 forest fire, and Beijixing Park provides a wider view over the settlement. Beiji and Beihong villages lie farther out along the river border. They require separate transfers rather than being extensions of a short walk through town.
The Qing government opened a gold mine at Laogou (老沟). Mohe County was abolished in 1947 and merged into Huma County (呼玛县). In 1981, the State Council (国务院) approved its re-establishment, combining northern Huma communes with the districts of Amuer (阿木尔), Tuqiang (图强) and Gulian (古莲). The county government was formally established at Xilinji (西林吉镇) on 16 August 1981.
Mohe lies in northwestern Heilongjiang, bordering Tahe County (塔河县) to the east, Inner Mongolia to the west and south, and Russia across the Heilongjiang River (黑龙江) to the north. The Emu'er River (额木尔河) rises at the northern foot of Yilehuli Mountain (伊勒呼里山) and flows for 230 kilometres within the municipality before joining the Heilongjiang at Gucheng Island (古城岛). The 2020 census recorded a population of 54,036.
