Beihong Village 北红村

Beihong is a northern border village where log-built mukeleng houses provide a tangible link to local Russian-influenced domestic architecture.

About Beihong Village

The settlement is surrounded by forest, with the Heilongjiang River forming the international boundary nearby. Its attraction is this combination of lived-in streets, timber construction and open river views. Tourism and family guesthouses are established here, so descriptions of an entirely undeveloped village are misleading; approach homes and community buildings with the same courtesy you would elsewhere.

The village was formerly known as Dacaodianzi Village (大草甸子村). It is in Beiji Town (北极镇), within the city of Mohe in China's Heilongjiang province. Beihong lies farther north than Beiji Village (北极村), although maps published in mainland China show it farther south because of cartographic distortion. Another settlement, Wusuli Village (乌苏里村), once stood east of Dacaodianzi. Wusuli was farther north than both Beiji and Beihong, a position shown on mainland maps as well as reflected in its actual location. That settlement no longer exists.

What to look for

  • Mukeleng houses built from logs and timber, viewed from the public village streets.
  • The forest-and-border-river setting from the village's permitted viewpoints.
