About China Snow Town
China Snow Town (中国雪乡) is the common name of the scenic area in Xuexiang National Forest Park (雪乡国家森林公园), also called Shuangfeng Forest Farm (双峰林场), in Changting town (长汀镇), Hailin (海林), Mudanjiang (牡丹江), Heilongjiang. The park is run by the Dahailin Forestry Bureau (大海林林业局).
The park lies at about 1,100 m where the Zhangguangcai Range (张广才岭) and the Laoye Range (老爷岭) of the Changbai Mountains (长白山) meet, and covers 17,916 hectares. Cold air from Lake Baikal and moist air from the Sea of Japan meet here repeatedly, and the forested high ground adds its own microclimate. Snow falls from October to the following April, a season of seven months; the operator gives average annual snowfall as 2.6 m, with a record of nearly 4 m, and lying snow up to about 2 m deep. The snow is soft and sticky and takes the shape of whatever it lands on.
The park was founded in 2001 and was approved as a national AAAA-rated tourist attraction in October 2010. After the 2014 ban on logging natural forest, the forest farm turned entirely to tourism. The reality show Where Are We Going, Dad? (爸爸去哪儿) was filmed here and raised the area's profile; Taking Tiger Mountain by Tactics (智取威虎山) was also shot here, and the local "eight big stews" (雪乡八大炖) appeared in the second season of A Bite of China (舌尖上的中国). After an online article of 29 December 2017 described fraud and overcharging at a guesthouse, the Dahailin forestry tourism bureau investigated and on 3 January 2018 penalised the guesthouse and ordered it to correct its practices.
Visitors stay in hotels or in log cabins with heated brick beds (kang). Local cooking relies on ingredients residents grow, gather or raise, prepared by stewing, stir-frying, braising in soy paste and roasting. Selling sunflower seeds in their shells is banned so that husks do not litter the snow.
