About Baiyun Mountain (Henan)
Its wooded uplands and frequently clouded peaks are the basis of the landscape attraction.
Yuhuang Peak is a principal summit reference. This is a mountain excursion well outside central Luoyang, so select a route around the specific scenic sector you want to explore. Do not confuse this Baiyun Mountain with places of the same name elsewhere in China.
The mountain is named for the abundance of unusual, shifting cloud formations around its peaks. It was designated a national forest park by the Ministry of Forestry in 1992 and upgraded to a national nature reserve in 1998; in 2005 it won a nationwide 'most beautiful places in China' poll run by Chinese National Geography together with 34 media outlets, taking first place in both the media/public and online/mobile voting groups. It was designated a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区) in 2011.
The scenic area covers about 168 square kilometers. Below Yuhuang Peak (玉皇顶), the ridge continues to Jijiaojian (鸡角尖), a sharp, jagged peak popular with hikers, and then to the granite ridge of Jijiaoman (鸡角曼), whose forested summit has earned it the nickname 'Little Huangshan.' The Jiulong Waterfall (九龙瀑布) descends about 100 meters along natural rock grooves in nine separate cascades, and a cave known as Luoguodong (锣鼓洞), set within primeval forest, measures about 18 meters high, 17 meters wide and 34 meters deep.
Baiyun Mountain lies on the boundary between Luoyang and Nanyang and spans the watersheds of the Yangtze, Yellow and Huai rivers. Its forest cover supports a wide range of wildlife, including golden eagles, leopards and giant salamanders, and its higher slopes contain one of the central plain's largest and best-equipped high-altitude forest recreation areas.
