About Taihao Mausoleum
The surviving layout follows a plan established in the Ming period and repaired under the Qing.
Successive gates and enclosure walls lead through the ceremonial axis. Major features include Tongtian Hall, Xianren Hall, the Bagua altar and the burial mound.
Records indicate that a tomb already existed on the site during the Spring and Autumn period, and Emperor Taizu of the Song dynasty (宋太祖) later ordered a temple built there, before the present layout was set down during the Ming dynasty. Taihao Mausoleum was listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in November 1996, as part of the fourth such batch, and in February 2024 it was further designated a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区).
The complex faces south and covers 875 mu (亩). Its Tongtian Hall (统天殿) is five bays wide and three bays deep beneath a single-eave hip-and-gable roof, and holds a statue of Fuxi (伏羲); the larger Xianren Hall (显仁殿), seven bays wide and five bays deep, has a double-eave hip-and-gable roof. Before the tomb stands a stele inscribed "Taihao Fuxi's Mausoleum"; the round-topped, square-based mound behind it is 20 metres high with a circumference of 150 metres.
What to look for
- Successive gates and walls divide the ceremonial axis into nested precincts.
