About Wolonggang

Its courtyards, memorial buildings and inscribed stones developed over many centuries, giving the visit layers beyond the Three Kingdoms narrative. The site’s association with Zhuge Liang’s early farming life is a tradition contested by other locations. The nearby Han stone-relief museum offers a different view of the region through carved scenes from an earlier period.

The ridge is said to take its name from its undulating, winding shape, likened to a crouching dragon. In 1711, during the Qing Kangxi era (清康熙五十年), Wuhou Shrine (武侯祠) was renovated, and the Ten Scenes of Wolonggang (卧龙岗十景) and Wolong Academy (卧龙书院) were rebuilt according to an earlier Complete Map of Longgang (龙岗全图).

The site today preserves buildings dating from the Yuan through Qing dynasties, along with steles, plaques and couplets from the Han dynasty onward; their number is said to be the largest of any Wuhou shrine in the country, and includes stone-carved versions of Zhuge Liang's Memorial on Setting Out (前后《出师表》) in the calligraphy of Yue Fei (岳飞). The adjoining Han Painting Museum (汉画馆) is a national first-grade museum (中国国家一级博物馆).

Background & history

It is famous for having been the home of the strategist Zhuge Liang before his rise to prominence during the Three Kingdoms period. Zhuge lived in the area for about ten years, and it is now known by his epithet Wolong 卧龙, which means 'crouching dragon'.
